You are being watched from afar . . .

You are being watched from afar . . .

I am not a huge fan of the Lord of the Rings but was impressed by Peter Jackson’s visualization of the “powers of darkness” and especially the “Eye of Sauron”. Well the “Eye of Sauron” has turned its throbbing and bloodshot gaze on my little blog . . . in the form of a broadside from one of the intellectual heavy hitters of our conservative intellectual tradition Mr Clint Heine, who in addition to a charming way with words also has a great name that sounds, well, very right wing.

A hysterical and vicious Hard Right political network has grown into existence in recent years based on the blogosphere and one loud, slightly unhinged digital voice blarping and braying over the herd of angry finance students is that of Clint. His point of difference is he not only hates anyone who has a concern for other human beings (or as he refers to them, communists) but he now also hates Dunedin.

Clint claims he was a “playboy” during his time in Dunedin, an image that causes a shudder. Playboy probably translates as one of the drunken, emotionally incontinent slobs who arrive in town to “sink some piss” for their tenure and generally bring the vibe down for us locals. Anyway I don’t know, as I’ve never met Clint socially, but he seems to be slightly to the Right of Pinochet, and he is scared that Dunedin is going to elect a radical left winger one of these days.

It’s bad that Clint is scared. As we all know, Fear is the path to the Dark Side. Fear leads to anger, anger leads to hate, hate leads to suffering . . .

  1. Touche my good man. My post was about why some of your comrades were excited about Chavez and his armed revolution, as well as the Red Guards…. a little to the left don’t you think mate?

I am centre right – at best. I’m as liberal as they come and come from a background from Labour and from very strong working class roots which I am very proud of. But shhh, don’t tell that to my Capitalist overlords, they will beat me 🙂

You never met me, that is a pity. I got on with people from all sides of the political spectrum down there and shared a beer with all and sundry apart from those who “hated” me, which incidentally were those on the very radical fringes. All of about a dozen – the same people who never came up to say hi to me.

I will be in Dunedin over Xmas, as I miss the place. I most certainly do not hate Dunners either – in fact I tell everybody to get their asses down there if they want a decent degree and wonderful lifestyle. My playboy days were down to me enjoying every part of society, be it my volunteering for local groups or indulging in the lifestyle.

I invite you to meet me when I am down. My wife, who is Czech and who I am grateful to for filling me in on life under communism and socialism, would be very happy to meet you over a beer. Just pop me another message on my blog in Dec or visit me on Facebook.

    Regards,

  2. Mr Heine, a pleasure to meet in person, as it were.

As you will note my comments on my post are in disagreement with those who have illusions about “revolutions” and specifically Red Guards. However the young guy in question is about as likely to become a Red Guard as I am . . . or perhaps as likely as you to become an agent of the Gestapo (in other words, not very likely at all.)

I would be honoured to meet you and your wife when you are next down in the South . . . I already spent several years in the 1990s in the Political Studies department given the third degree in tutorials by a Czech lecturer for these same supposed sins. Of course, as a democratic socialist firmly opposed to Stalinism, I don’t have a case to answer 🙂

But I suppose this cuts both ways . . . in my job for the Maritime Union I have come across plenty of overseas fishermen and seafarers who are paid slave wages, beaten up or treated like shit, and no one gives a toss because that’s the free market at work and it all happens out of sight and out of mind. Anyway, enough politics for one night. Just enough to say we all form our views from experiences and perhaps are not driven entirely by envy or hate.

I can’t guarantee that I will have fulfilled your prediction of a radical southerner in the beehive by Xmas . . . but we will have to wait and see for that one. If I am successful, I will expect even a warrior of the right such as yourself would be shouting at least one ale.

  3. Ah yes, I know the politics lecturer you are speaking of, I actually couldn’t understand a word she said! 🙂

If you make it in I will indeed shout the ale 🙂

    All the best.

  4. Um, Clint – “student and playboy”?

Just what did you, La Roche et al get up to? 🙂

  5. Hey Andrew, glad to say I kept out of anything La Roche did thankfully. 🙂 I heard he was pissing off Victoria Uni students a few years ago…I’m sure you guys held a farewell party for him? Ha ha.

I extend my invitation for a drink when I am back from the UK in Dec. I already have a beer lined up with Baxter then too.

There will always be a place for you in the worker’s militia, Victor. You’ll change your mind when the time comes. 😉
